Sobre este artículo

London: Edward Arnold & Co, 1924. Very good plus.. Signed limited first edition of Forster's acclaimed book set in British colonial India during the rise of the Indian independence movement, often numbered among the greatest novels of the 20th century. A PASSAGE TO INDIA was the product of Forster's longstanding interest in India, intensified by his close friendship with Syed Ross Masood, vice chandellor of Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh, and grounded in his own travels through India in 1912 and his 1921 position as private secretary to the Maharajah of Dewas (both later described in THE HILL OF DEVI).

The most successful of Forster's novels, it inspired a 1960 Forster-approved play by Santha Rama Rau as well as the 1984 film by David Lean, and was awarded both the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Prix Femina Vie Heureuse.

An attractive copy of the uncommon limited edition. 9'' x 5.5''. Original quarter brown cloth with fawn paper boards, paper spine label. Top edge gilt. Lacking original slipcase. Edition of 200 copies, of which this copy is no. 63. Signed by Forster at colophon. 325, [1] pages. Light soil and scuffing to boards, toning to spine label and board edges. Interior largely clean.

Sinopsis

A Passage to India by E.M. Forster is considered a monumental work of English Literature. The book tells the story of race and empire in India during the British Raj. A false accusation of sexual assault based on racist English assumptions forms the basis of the story. Dr. Aziz, a Muslim physician, is accused of assaulting a young woman during an expedition to Marabar Caves. The trial and ultimate consequences of the accusation expose the deep problems with British governance in India during this period, and the depth of feeling opposed to British rule among the Indian people. The book has received several awards, including the James Talt Black Memorial Prize in 1924, and is present on several lists of the best books of the twentieth century.
