A book in three parts, the first covers the expansion and consolidation of the Roman Empire; the second discusses the present state of research and some of the controversies that have ariosen (e.g. the notion of slavery, colonizarion, oscial tensions); the final part comprises a detailed and comprehensive bibliography which has been thoroughly updated since the original French edition.
