Good with no dust jackets. 1882. 108 Chromolithographic colour / colored lithograph full size plates - $50 each on (108 x 50 = 5040!) Revised Edition; First Printing. Gilt stamped green cloth Hardcover. No damp stains. Original price (30 shillings) in pencil, Bound in their original bindings. The covers are rubbed on the corners, with some surface rubbing and some shelf wear. Top edges gilt.The contents are in generally good condition but where plates are loose the edges have sometimes sustained some damage " ; 4to 11" - 13" tall First Edition was 1850-53 Notes on each volume: Vol I: 1882 good condition but six plates loose and subsequent damage to some edges and binding is somewhat loose; Vol II: 1883 slight cracking to front endpaper joint, minor foxing to some pages but generally good condition; Vol III: 1884 four plates are loose some have edge damage. Some foxing. Priced in pencil 30 shillings
Sir Joseph Paxton ( 1803 - 1865) was an English gardener and architect, best known for designing the Crystal Palace. William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire offered the 20-year-old Paxton the position of Head Gardener at Chatsworth, which was considered one of the finest landscaped gardens of the time. Paxton also published a monthly magazine, The Horticultural Register. This was followed by the Magazine of Botany, the Pocket Botanical Dictionary and then 3 volume, The Flower Garden. - Wikipedia
