[iv], 112 pp., 200 bw plates. Oversized and heavy. 22 page introduction in volume 1 discusses the various collections from which these images come. The paintings are from a span of nearly a thousand years and are arranged chronologically. In each section, the plates are described with an attribution, a short physical description, and any notable comments on the work's history, aesthetics, or provenance. The descriptions are printed together in a short section of letterpress pages, which is followed by the plates.
