Gold-coloured publisher’s cloth, gilt lettering on spine (minor shelfwear, rear hinge just starting, minor wear to corners), w/ d.j. splendid Art Deco cover art w/ initials R. Bloomer of the Temple of Heaven, printed on thick coated paper stock (minor sunning to spine, a couple closed tears), still VG/VG bright copy, w/ former ownership markings dated 1936 on ffep., “French Bookstore” bookseller’s label on rear pastedown. Third edition, revised & enlarged with additional map and illustrations, of this edition of the invaluable and well-illustrated travel guide and history of Peking [Beijing], China, prior to World War II featured . Including sections describing the Forbidden City, the Ming Tombs, the Western Hills, and even the Great Wall, Bredon has provided a fascinating contemporary history of the city. Bredon Lauru (ca. 1881-1937) parents married in San Francisco in 1879, and after arriving in China in 1882 as a child survived the Boxer Rebellion, and wrote several books. She immigrated back to the U.S. in 1924, living both in China and the U.S., eventually dying in San Francisco.
