Foreword and commentary by Frank Gibney, foreword by Edward Crankshaw, list of illustrations and four appendices. The text is illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Blue coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Plaintext dustwrapper with blue, white and black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. In the spring of 1963 Colonel Oleg Penkovsky was convicted of spying and shot in Moscow. His crime? Spying for the West, at the time of the increasing heighting tensions of the Cold War. Quoting from the front panel blurb " ... But no less fantastic than his exploits as a spy is the fact that Penkovsky himself actually kept a record of what he was doing and why, and smuggled out to the west." This is that record. Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges with a little rubbing of the book corners. Slight cock of the spine. Light age toning of the text block edges and pages. Pages 251 through to 256 have a vertical crease their full length. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with significant sunning to the back strip. Lighter sunning to the rear panel.
