Sobre este artículo

Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1914. Hardcover. Illustrations by Gordon Grant. Small 8vo. Blue mesh cloth with white lettering and front board white and black circular pictorial stamping. 345pp. Frontispiece, 11 full-page called-for line drawings, numerous small line drawings. Very good. Mild edgewear, with spine lettering a tad rubbed only. A tight and attractive first edition, second state (and first state binding), with all proper points. Sharp copy of this Hoosier classic, with fun modern autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf (recto and verso) are fine, matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards boldly signed by four of the cast members from the 1951 musical film "On Moonlight Bay," based on "Penrod," and a 1953 sequel "By the Light of the Silvery Moon." Front flyleaf (recto, top to bottom): DORIS DAY (1922-2019), who plays Marjorie Winfield, pens "love" and signs in black fineline; BILLY GRAY (born 1938), who plays Wesley Winfield, signs in black ballpoint and dates it 26 January 1990 at upper right. Front flyleaf (verso, top to bottom): RUSSELL ARMS (1920-2012), who plays Chester Finley, signs in blue ballpoint and dates it 5 September 1982 at upper right; and MARY WICKES (1910-95), who plays housekeeper Stella, signs in black fineline and dates it 30 November 1974 at upper right. A nice first extra-illustrated with four relevant film version mementos. Original signature transmittal envelopes for Gray, Arms and Wickes are laid in. RUSSO AND SULLIVAN 29.

Sinopsis

Penrod is a collection of comic sketches by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Booth Tarkington that was first published in 1914. The book follows the trials and misadventures of Penrod Schofield, an eleven-year-old boy growing up in the pre-World War I Midwestern United States, in a similar vein to Tom Sawyer. Penrod establishes the characters and the relationships between them who go on to appear in two further books, Penrod and Sam (1916) and Penrod Jashber (1929).
