1st session, 5th Parliament, 18 Victroia, 1854

Petition of J. H. Glass, and J. R. Gemmill, on behalf of the Inhabitants of the County of Lambton, praying that no extension of power be granted to either the Great Western or Grand Trunk Railway Companies, unless on certain conditions.

(Mr. Brown.)

Ordered, by the Legislative Assembly, to be printed, 24th, Nov. 1854

Petition of the inhabitants of Lambton County against GWR / GTR stranglehold over Railroad lines to Port of Sarnia, as those companies received the authorization to construct lines up to that port long ago, but never did anything.

Robert Bell was a printer, businessman, office holder, politician, justice of the peace, and militia officer. He ran successfully as a reform candidate in the general election of 1847-48 which he represented in the Legislative Assembly until 1851. Throughout his life Bell maintained his residence in Carleton Place. In the elections of 1854, 1857-58, 1861, and 1863 he won the Lanark North seat.
