No Dust Jacket
Book: Shelf wear on the gutter edges and boar tips (photo). Moderate uniform toning of pages.
PP 71-74 were dog-eared due to an instance of careless closing of the book. It does not notably interfere with the overall appearance and utility of the book but is a blemish. The dog ears were carefully unfolded but a crease remains visible.
Deckled pages, The spine and board junctions are strong and firm, the book can be read without fear of causing any structural damage. Richly illustrated (25 plates).
This was the author's first book, first printing, and has since been reprinted and still being sold.
Undedicated and boldly inscribed author signature in black ink on first free endpaper. (photo).
The book and topic were the basis for the 1939 film directed by William Dieterle. The screenplay was primarily written by John Huston. Brian Aherne, Betty Davis and Paul Muni starred in the movie rendition.
