This episode was used by the unscrupulous politician Henry Parkes for his own political gain by fanning sectarian bigotry about an alleged Irish Catholic or Fenian plot. The Fenians were an Irish revolutionary nationalist brotherhood seeking an independent Irish state.

The prince recovered but his would-be assassin, tried under a law peculiar to New South Wales, was hanged.
