An accomplished apothecary and professor at the Jardin des Plantes, Charas was appointed pharmacist to Charles II in 1679, just after the publication of the first edition (1676) of this his most important work. He moved back and forth between there and Europe - he was also the author of an important, if mostly wrong, work on snake venom. His pharmacopia was an important work eliding alchemy into chemistry.
