W Churchill, London, 1718. Nineth Edition. Good/No Jacket. 406 pages (complete). A gratifyingly aged copy of this rare extant ninth edition. At some stage the book was rebound, with consequent retrimming of pages. Half leather with linen-cloth boards. The book has a clear cellophane protective cover. The leathered corners and spine have some light wear about the edges and seams. The spine has five ridges with gilt titling. Despite some light wear to the head and foot and seams, the spine is handsome and clubbable. The boards have some scuffing, shelving wear, handling marks. They are steady and sure. Within: later end-papers. Previous owner signatures on the frontispage. The pages are venerable, elderly. They are tanned, browned throughout from the years they bear. There is amiable wear about the page edges from use and storage and time. There is general foxing. Despite all these distractions, the pages are clean, clear, confident, more than competent, genial, engaging, welcoming, companionable, agreeable and able. fk.
