Octagonal collapsible tabletop candle screen composed of white cloth over stiff card stock to which is mounted to each folding panel a 3-D cloth, silk, and hand-colored paper rendering of the Eight Immortals, accompanied by a separate octagonal card paper base. Cloth slightly foxed at extremities, perished tape repair visible on the interior (but not externally), abrasion from removed sticker to base piece significantly affecting the "Made in Hong Kong" rubber-stamp, else a Very Good example. Attractive example of a popular theme for a tabletop candle screen, the Eight Immortals holding the power to banish evil.

First Edition. 12mo (15.5cm.); armorial binding of Madame de Maintenon, full crimson morocco adorned with her coat-of-arms on both covers, triple-ruled in gilt with diminutive repeating rampant lions at each corner, elaborate gilt spine in six compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; 100pp.; illus. and calligraphic text printed entirely from copper-plates, this copy featuring the more often-found depiction of an empty cross within a crown of thorns printed on title page verso. Light rubbing to extremities, brief discoloration to upper cover from exposure to damp, inoffensive surface abrasion to front pastedown from previously-removed ex libris, slightly later ink note in Latin to front flyleaf, else a Very Good or better copy of an exquisite production in a desirable presentation binding. Octavo; full contemporary blind-tooled paneled calf, two black gilt-lettered spine labels; [2],xxvi,[4],512pp. ([a]4 b-d4 B-2K8). Boards somewhat crudely reattached and restored along extremities, brief cracking to spine affecting gilt without loss of meaning, attractive contemporary calligraphic ownership inscription to front free endpaper of a Thomas Williams, mid-20th century ownership rubberstamp to front pastedown, else a Very Good copy overall. Text opens with a short biographical preface "giving some Account of [Walter's] Life and Character," signed by Thomas Prince (1687-1758) and Thomas Foxcroft (1697-1769). The former was an especially notable member of Colonial Boston society, having first made his mark as a student at Harvard where Increase Mather recognized him as a "praying student" (see the DAB 15, p. 232-3). Original half red calf with red cloth boards, six compartments to spine, gilt lettering, top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Each volume housed in a custom-made clamshell case with mounted title labels. Light wear to extremities and joints with some general scuffing; patch of discoloration to rear of volume II.
