'Beefcake magazines' waren Zeitschriften die zwischenden 1930er und 1960er Jahren in Nordamerika publiziert wurden. Sie zeigten Photographien junger, attraktiver muskulöser Männer in athletischen Posen. Die wichtigste Zielgruppe waren homosexuelle Männer, dennoch präsentierten sich die Magazine als Forum für die Propagierung von Fitness und Gesundheit. Wegen der konservativen und homophoben Stimmung der Zeit konnte homosexuelle Pornographie ncht offen verkauft werden. So wandten sich Homsexuelle den 'Beefcake magazines' zu, die sie auch an Zeitungsständen und Buchhandlungen erwerben konnten. Im Dezember 1945 gründete Bob Mizer, ein Pionier der homosexuellen Pornographie, die Athletic Model Guild, oder AMG. Diese Gesellschaft erzeugte schließlich Physique Pictorial.
