A decorative, fascinating piece of Southern California history, this 1954 map celebrates Los Angeles' developing freeway system, color coded to show "completed or under construction" "budgeted" and "future construction." Compiled from an impeccable source ("Basic cartographic data supplied by State of California, Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, District VII. 4-1-54.") the map is enlivened with brightly colored pictographs of points of interest along the freeways such as the Farmer's Market, UCLA campus, and the headquarters of the map publishers, Pacific Press. The Los Angeles Allied Printing Trades Council is also listed as publisher - a reminder of an era when trade union influence was at its peak in the U.S.; this is reflected in the cartouche at lower left showing a clean cut man in overalls with tools of trade standing against a background of skyscrapers and factories. On the right is a woman positioned next to the Allied Printing Union label. We have been unable to locate a copy of this in OCLC/WorldCat. .
