Abbey, scenery 427 - As with many copies, the added engraved title has a trimmed-away caption. Binding a bit worn, but sturdy and handsome; book shows little foxing. Near Fine internally in a solid very good or better binding; see scans. Also, for the collector of scarce old bookseller's pasted labels, the front pastedown bears the small [.5" x 1"] label of: "Lapworth. Printer, Binder, Performer, Newspaper Agent. Stratford. " Samuel Ireland, an engraver, collector and publisher who worked in London at the close of the eighteenth century and who was unfortunately [and at least initially unwittingly] connected with some rather infamous Shakespeare forgeries, would doubtless prefer to be better remembered - and perhaps should be - for his series of visually evocative geographical offerings, such as this one, than for the scandal. But people will be people. Please see all scans. L53n
