Sobre este artículo
Uncolored copper engraving. Image measures 12.25" x 20.25".<br/><br/> This rare bird's-eye view of Sampierdarena, referred to here as "S. Pietro D'Arena," depicts the major port of Genoa, Italy. In the immediate foreground is now lost lighthouse which marked the entrance to the original port of Genoa. The city's harbor extends to the left and has two ships floating in it. Then comes a shoreline dotted with people and boats, behind which the city extends toward the horizon. Buildings are shown at an oblique angle whereby their front facades can be seen straight-on, highlighting the architecture of the city. A key in the bottom margin and running up the right border of the map indicates important sites and buildings. At the top of the print, two cherubs hold a ribbon bearing the view's title. The print appeared in Volckamer's "Nuernbergische Hesperides," published circa 1708-14. It is a dark impression in good condition, with some discoloration at the folds and minor overall staining. Narrow margins as issued. Johann Christoph Volckamer (1662--1744) was a wealthy German merchant who was one of the first to cultivate citrus fruits north of the Alps in his orangerie. He became involved in printmaking after hiring artists and engravers to produce prints of his fruits. While best known for these fruit prints, Volckamer also produced delightful views of the gardens and palaces of Europe that showcased the Baroque architecture of the period. This lovely view of Genoa exemplifies this rare series of his work.<br/><br/>
