Satisfaction Guaranteed. The pioneer women of Texas were characteristically strong willed, a fact which is made obvious in this collection of biographies compiled from facts contributed by descendents or friends of each woman under discussion. Pioneer Women in Texas is an excellent tribute to the feminine strength which supported the masculine determination to settle the West. The subjects of these biographies often came to the wild Texas frontier from genteel backgrounds. This contrast is made evident repeatedly, as in the story of the young woman from Limerick County Ireland who barred herself and her infant in a primitive cabin for three days and nights while outside marauding Indians slaughtered cattle in the corral nearby; and of the Virginia belle who stood alone between her own children and band of kidnapping plains Indians. They were familiar with solitude and disappointment but seldom, if ever, did they weaken to despair. It is to their credit and honor that these women never forsook the harsh lives they had chosen for the more pleasant lives they once had. . Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
