The first book of this text is of outstanding historical importance. Here, in thirty pages of admirably clear Latin, Cesalpino presented the principles of botany, grouping a wealth of careful observations under broad categories, on the model of Aristotle and Theophrastus. "Caesalpinus's philosophy is Aristotelian: plants have a vegetable soul which is responsible for nutrition and for the reproduction of organisms. Nutrition was believed to come from the roots in the soil and to be carried up the stems to produce the fruit. Hence, the roots, stems and fruit are the main characteristics selected by Caesalpinus as the basis for his classification" (PMM).
Cesalpino was the first to elaborate a system of the plants based on a unified and coherent group of notions. By paying little attention to the medicinal uses of plants he raised botany to the level of an independent science. Our copy is an interesting example for an early re-used binding, recased in the 17th or 18th century, upside-down with the hand lettering of the former work still present at foot of the spine.

Later half roan and stippled cloth, lightly rubbed at the extremities; a very crisp and bright copy. 'The first important botanical work by a supporter of the doctrine of evolution by natural selection' (Norman, often quoted, but not going nearly far enough in our opinion!). A singular rarity, of the utmost importance. In the concluding paragraph of the postscript, unique to this edition, Hooker writes: 'I would further observe here, to avoid ambiguity, that my friend Mr. Darwin's just completed work "On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection" [sic], from the perusal of much of which in MS. I have profited so largely, had not appeared during the printing of the Essay, or I should have largely quoted it. Kew, November, 4, 1859'.

London : Printed by J Davis [Vols I & II] and B Wilks [Vol III] for the Author, 1798 A very good copy of the complete 3 volume 1st edition including later Supplement, with 440 hand coloured plates on 436 leaves. This work was James Sowerby's follow up to his successful English Botany and he both drew, and engraved the plates and oversaw the colouring. He immersed himself in the study of mushrooms over the period of work, which was published between 1798 and 1809, including creating 200 models of larger species, and making his collection of specimens available to public view. In his introduction to the Supplement (which was issued without separate title) he states his concern that the identification of many individual species, with illustrations that focus only on perfect specimens, might confuse the public into eating poisonous fungi. His response was to illustrate a number of specimens rather than the 'perfect one' and to model a number of poisonous species for public inspection. This…

Berlin: Paul Parey, 1892. Hardcover. Good +. iv, [2], 602, [6] p.: in-text drawings; 24 cm. Dark brown coth with gilt-stamped spine title; color orchid illustration on front board. All page edges marbled. Elaborately decorated endpapers with ownership space on front fixed endpaper filled in by W. Nahlop. This was most likely Wilhelm Nahlop, who was head gardener for over 25 years in the late 19th and early 20th centuries at the Schloss Britz, now in the Britz district of Berlin. Four unpaginated page of publisher's advertisements follow text. The author, Berthold Stein (1847-1899), was the inspector of the Breslau Botanic Garden. In Good+ Condition: edges rubbed; ends of spine fraying; cloth splitting over joints with tear across lower spine; foxing, heaviest on first and last leaves; soiling in margins of a few pages; otherwise clean and tight.
