DESCRIPTION

Two Volumes

(ii) + 199 + (ii)

(ii) + 280 + (ii)

Books measure 175mm x 120mm approximately.

Beautifully bound in three quarter maroon grained calf with gilt trim. Spine with five raised bands with title, volume and place in gilt to compartments. Marbled end-papers and paste-downs. Tissue-guarded engraving to title page verso of each volume. Top page edges in gilt. Inscription to front end-paper of each volume and previous owner plate of Lord Davies.

These volumes were presented to Lord David Davies (1880 to 1944) on his wedding day. Davies was the MP for Montgomeryshire, and fought in WWI. Hid family own the Plas Dinam Estate in Powys. He was an active supporter of The League of Nations and became First Baron of Llandinam in 1932.

CONDITION

In very good condition. The bindings are both extremely firm indeed. There are only a few very light surface scratches and some marks to boards. Internally the pages are clean and bright throughout, with just some minor shadowing to end-papers and paste-downs. Slight bulge to lower rear half of volume II board.

Overall, a beautifully bound set of volumes in very good condition.

INTERESTING

John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury (1834 to 1913), was an English banker, Liberal politician, philanthropist, scientist and polymath. Lubbock worked in his family company as a banker but made significant contributions in archaeology, ethnography, and several branches of biology. He coined the terms "Paleolithic" and "Neolithic" to denote the Old and New Stone Ages, respectively. He helped establish archaeology as a scientific discipline, and was also influential in nineteenth-century debates concerning evolutionary theory. He introduced the first law for the protection of the UK's archaeological and architectural heritage.
