Front board slightly bowed. Light foxing and a few slight bumps to edges of text block. Dust jacket is sunned to spine, lightly soiled, lightly creased in a few spots, chipped to head of rear cover, foxed to rear fore edge. Plutarch was a man of extraordinarily broad experience: a Delphic priest, a leading Platonist and moral teacher, an intellectual leader equally at home in his native Chaeronea, in Athens, or in Rome. Mr. Barrow gives a close descriptive analysis of each of Plutarch's principle writings and discusses the background and probable date of each work. In addition, he describes the geography, economy and political history of the ancient world, explores Plutarch's probably sources, discusses his influence on later periods, and reviews the history of English translations of Parallel Lives.
