The first collected edition of his poems was published in 1645, and several new editions were publised during the 17th- and 18th-centuries. The second part with the altered ”Maids Tragedy” was published in 1690, of which this is ”... an unauthorized edition, edited by Francis Atterbury, which is condemned in the prefatory note to Waller’s The maid’s tragedy altered” (ESTC). Edmund (or Edmond) Waller (1606-87) was a poet and politician at the court of Charles I. He was arrested after the outbreak of the English Civil War for supporting the Crown, and went into exile to France and Switzerland. A reissue of these two parts was made in 1694 with the title to part one changed to ”with addition of The maid’s tragedy altered”.
