Blue cloth cover with blind stamping on front and back, gilt on spine. Text block gilt all edges. B&W portrait of the author and chapter decorations. "Author's Edition" stated.Wear and bumping on cover, especially corners and top of spine. Spine is darkened. Decorative tissue on frontispiece is torn and missing a piece. Pages are age tanned, and there is some cracking in the interior of the book.

Jean Ingelow (1820-1897) was a poet and novelist who also wrote short stories for children; her verse impressed Tennyson who became a friend. This edition was made by Andrew Lang (known primarily now for his colour Fairy Books).
