Matthew Arnold was a poet and critic, who famously served as the headmaster of Rugby School. Ranked among the bets poets of the Victorian era, Arnold's work often focused on contemporary social issues and was very well received. His pursuit of literary criticism and the study of literature saw Arnold appointed Professor of Poetry at Oxford University in 1857. He was particularly influential, being the first professors to deliver lectures in English rather than the traditional Latin. He also spent some time abroad, studying the European education systems oh behalf of the British government, ideas from which formed his self-published work 'The Popular Education of France'. This charmingly volume is features a portrait of the poet to the frontispiece, and in bound in an attractive olive green cloth binding. In an full cloth binding. Externally, smart. Some mild wear to the extremities including slight bumping to the corners. Light age toning to the front endpaper. With an ink inscription also to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with the occasional handling mark and isolated spot throughout. Protective tissue paper covering the frontispiece is slightly age toned. Very Good
