London: Burns & Lambert, 1855. xii, 319pp, [1]. Contemporary navy half-calf, tooled in gilt and blind, navy cloth boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, all edges red. A trifle rubbed. Very occasional light spotting. Contemporary bookplate with motto 'sancta maria ora pro nobis' and initials 'W. H.' to FEP, recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to recto of FFEP. A handsome copy of the collected poems of Aubrey Thomas de Vere (1814- 1902), dedicated to theologian, and leader of the Oxford movement, Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890). De vere first met Newman in 1838. In 1854 the Irish Catholic hierarchy appointed Newman to be first rector of the Catholic University of Ireland. Newman in turn established de Vere in the chair of political and social science. However, de Vere, ever preoccupied with his poetry, gave no lectures and took no students. . First edition. 8vo.

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.
Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.
We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.
We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
