All text is creamy white, clean, crisp and unmarked. First Aldine British Poet Edition. Printed 1835 by Charles Whittingham. 4.25" wide by 6.5" tall. Includes LIFE OF SAMUEL BUTLER (pp. vii-xxxii); Notes and Appendix (pp. xxxiii-l) by the Rev. John Mitford. Tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece portrait of Butler. Both title pages are imprinted with Pickering's dolphin and anchor device (Keynes device no. iv). Uniformly bound in contemporary full calf, gilt-decorated with raised bands on the spine. Blind-stamped spine lettering. Beautiful marbled endpapers with matching marbled text block edges. The front endpaper of each volume has the tiny ticket of Hugh Hopkins, Bookseller, 50 Glassford Street, Glasgow [Scotland]. Keynes, p. 48, with asterisk designating "special merit" (in WILLIAM PICKERING PUBLISHER, A MEMOIR AND CHECKLIST OF HIS PUBLICATIONS, revised ed).. First William Pickering edition.
