London: Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press. 1905. 1st ed thus, octavo, pp.xxxii, 976, b&w engraved fronts port., some light foxing to plate, prev owner's inscr to ffep, marbled eps, a.e.g., minor scuffing to spine, bound in green morocco, gilt dec floral embossed designs to front and rear bds., gilt ruled dentelles with gilt monogram 'WHS' engraved on lower turn-in. A beautiful binding in the Arts and Craft style by Douglas Cockerell of W.H. Smith Bindery. Near fine condition. From 1905 to 1914, Douglas Cockerell operated the bindery at W.H. Smith & Son. In Hobsons "English Bindings", Cockerell notes that bindings signed with the WHS stamp during this period were specially designed by him 1st edition thus. Leather.
