Joseph Ewart (1831 – 1906) was a surgeon major in the Bengal Army. In 1853 he joined the Bengal Medical Service, which was then a part of the East India Company, eventually becoming a professor of physiology and medicine and later the principal of the Calcutta Medical College. He was also a presiding member of numerous institutions and organizations including the Snake Poison Commission and the Bengal Social Science Association.
