Pp. viii+388+[4](advertisements), frontispiece with tissue guard, plus 11 plates, floral patterned endpapers; cr. 8vo; pictorial light brown cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, black, red & grey, the boards slightly bowed and scuffed, edges lightly faded and rubbed, a couple of tiny chips to bottom edge of upper board; Sunday School prize bookplate (dated 1903) on upper free endpaper, bookseller's blind stamp on dedication page, the upper hinge starting, outer leaves and edges lightly foxed; Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1901. Eighth thousand. *First published in 1886. Born in Scotland, William Gordon Stables (1840-1910) was a doctor in the Royal Navy and a prolific author of adventure stories for boys.
