Sobre este artículo
xi+184 pages with frontispiece map, facsimiles, plates, tables, appendixes, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1.4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial map to cover. First edition. In six chapters, Burkholder examines Baquíjano's family ties; economic and social positions; law studies; early academic successes; first trip to Madrid (and its miserable outcome); and attempts to earn merit as a university professor, as lawyer to various corporations, and as interim crown attorney, all of which came close to failure because of over ambitiousness and goals too highly set. Burkholder seeks to connect personal circumstances and enterprises of Baquíjano with general political developments and to contrast the personal strategy with the particular legal norms and political conceptions of the crown. Drawing on substantial new sources, Burkholder succeeds in illuminating the mechanisms and problems that a pretender to an audiencia post had to face if he, a native son, strove for a position in as important a tribunal as that of Lima, avoiding the career schedule. Condition: Remainder mark at heal end pages else near fine.
