Sobre este artículo

1747 ENGLISH 1ed Polymetis by Spence FOLIO Greco-Roman ART Mythology Philosophy

Joseph Spence was an 18th-century English historian known for his anecdotal essays and translations. One of his most important works was "Polymetis" – a collection of full-page engravings of ancient Greek and Roman art paired with dialogues over the works of art themselves. Each of the dialogues and engravings describe:

· various mythological figures

o Jupiter, Medusa, Minerva, Cupid, Hercules, Apollo, Mercury,

· the rise and fall of Roman art

· the influence of Greco-Roman style on 'modern' artists

· allegorical poetry such as Spencer's "Fairy Queen"

· discussions on the philosophy of Socrates

This enormous 1747 first edition folio contains each of the expected full-page engravings. A truly remarkable piece!
