As a freshly trained, 22-year-old fish culture extension agent, Mike Tidwell was ill prepared for the remote tribal chiefdom in central Zaire called Kalambayi. But little could have prepared him for his two years there with the Peace Corps. Parasitic diseases, physical exhaustion, and hopeless cultural frustrations all flew in the face of the slow progress he tried to make in teaching villagers to build fish ponds and raise fish.
