Previous owners' bookplates. Colored pencil underlining and marginalia to the first five pages of the introduction and epithet left under the frontispiece portrait illustration of the author. 216 pages. Placed in an archival mylar sleeve. A polemic against the Roman Catholic Church and its threat to both religious liberty and political freedom. Originally published in 1835. William Craig Brownlee (1784-1860) was a reformed minister and an outspoken critic of the Catholic Church. A native Lanarkshire, Scotland, he earned his masters degree at the University of Glasgow, and after coming to the United States held pastorates in Presbyterian churches in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In 1826 he was installed as a minister at the Collegiate Reformed Dutch church in New York City and served several Dutch Reformed Churches in Manhattan until his death in 1860.
