London : REEVE & CO, 1853 Popular British Ornithology is part of Reeve's Popular Natural History series which was produced to give young students a proper grounding in natural history subjects. This title is Gosse's only work on British Birds and is a beautifully put together study looking at the birds that an observer might see in each month of the year. It is a relatively rare title in what is becoming a hard to find series. This is a very good copy of the second edition which was identical to the first with 20 hand coloured plates of birds. The plate list is slightly confusing because the frontispiece is not numbered and plate 14 is placed earlier than it should be. The binding is particularly bright - with purple cloth and a gilt decoration of two birds and a nest on the front board and the hallmark gilt decoration to the spine. There is an ink signature of Frederick Lawrence, 1862, on the title page. Contents, including plates are clean and and bright. The contents are becoming slightly loose and the front endpaper is splitting - an endpaper repair would probably remedy both.

LONDON : A[ndrew]. C[lark]. for John Martyn, 1678 A very good copy in a high quality full leather binding. With title page in red and black ink; preface; text in 3 books with 2 plates of bird traps bound in, and 2 tables which serve as early identification keys; an appendix; summary of falconry; index and 78 plates of birds (including the dodo) at the rear. This is the first English edition translated from the original Latin which was published in 1676, four years after Willughby's death by his friend and colleague John Ray. It marks one of the first attempts to take a rational, scientific approach to classifying birds. It is a matter of debate, and current research, as to whether Willughby or Ray played a greater part in its development. Ray supervised the publication. The illustrations were commissioned from a number of sources and some birds are depicted twice where the initial image was not very good. This copy lacks the original endpapers - perhaps lost during the later rebinding - but is… Leer más

LONDON: George Bell & Sons, 1870 A nice set of the second edition of Morris's History of British Birds. In 6 volumes with original decorative cloth bindings and 365 hand coloured plates as called for. The bindings are all clean with bright gilt pictures of birds to each front board and gilt titles and decoration to spine. There is some wear: volume I has some cloth splitting at the hinges and splitting at the rear endpaper with rubbing to corners; volumes II, III and IV have very slight pulling to top and bottom of spine and a little rubbing at corners; volume V has very small splits at the top and bottom of the spine; and volume VI has a 1 inch tear at the top of the spine (with no loss) and scuffing at the corners. Internally all have the original endpapers; the first section including the frontispiece is becoming loose on volumes I, II, and III; volume IV is sound but the stitching is looser than on the others. There is a little spotting to some plates and text pages but in general the… Leer más

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you're not inclined to argue with.
