Steel-engravings with tissue guards, many wood-cut illustrations, and a colour folding map of ancient France. Vol. 1 has two title pages; the first is facing the frontispiece portrait of Guizot, has red and black lettering and states "With 340 Illustrations by Distinguished Artists." 3/4 calf with brown pebbled boards with gilt dentelling; all edges marbled; 4 raised bands and gilt decoration & lettering to spine; floral endpapers. A very good to near fine set (Vol. 1 front hinge cracked; neat owner name in pencil in each volume; light wear to extremities & spine). Next day shipping.
