Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Very scarce work. Written by English writer and poet, Mary Howitt, this comprehensive study provides insight into American history from the time of its discovery up until 1859. Howitt discusses the early discoveries, the colonisation of places such as Virginia and Maryland, the pilgrim fathers, the various governing bodies, the revolution of 1688, the Revolutionary War, and many other significant events.Illustrated with thirteen plates and a frontispiece to Volume I and seven plates and a frontispiece to Volume II. Collated, complete.With the bookplate of British American solicitor and businessman, Edmund Francis Davis, who once owned the Westgate Estate in Kent and the Granville Hotel in Ramsgate. Bound by E. Riley in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to boards, extremities and joints. The odd mark. Bookplate to the front paste down. Hinges are a little strained, but holding firm. Front endpaper is slightly strained to volume I. Bookseller stamp to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with the occasional light spot. Very Good
