Finely engraved (mezzotint??) India-paper proof. 'Robert Walpole, Earl of Orford. From the original of Jarvis in the collection of Thomas Walpole, Esqre. Drawn by Wm. Derby and engraved (with permission) by H.J. Robinson.' Light soiling and a small tear, without loss, in the margins. Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745) entered Parliament in 1701. He became 'prime minister' in 1721, the first to occupy the official residence at 10 Downing Street. After resigning in 1742 due to failing health, he was named Earl of Orford, a newly created title, and served in the House of Lords till his death in 1745. .
