Scholarly text examines the proposition that food availability can be increased cost-effectively by technological change to reduce farm-level postharvest food losses. A social benefit-cost analysis of the two major technological innovations in postharvest rice processing- pedal threshers and rice mills- shows that there is an adverse income distribution effect associated with the new machines, but only in the case of rice mills do these welfare losses exceed the production gains. 345 pp. Illustrated with charts and figures.
