In the beginning, the author writes of his own experiences as a child in South Carolina, then later as a W. P. A. Construction and installation expert. Through a fortuitous circumstance the author reached a point of financial independence which permitted him to make a trip to Europe. There he met a German manufacturer, a self-styled 'Privy Philosopher, 'who inspired him to compile this book, a loosely drawn, hilarious amount of the evolution of these necessities, told with a turn for the unusual .
