Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1959. Hardcover. 127p. + a [12]p. fascimile of the letter, decorated quarter-cloth boards, 6.25x8.5 inches, very good condition in a clear glassine wrapper. Number 503 of a limited edition of 650 copies. The letter, which appeared around 1165, was supposedly written by Prester John, King of India, to the Emperor of Rome and the King of France. In it "the fabulous Prester John declared himself to be a Christian ruler over a vast empire in India...[and] announced his intention to liberate the Holy Sepulcher from the infidels...the bulk of the message consisted of a profuse and somewhat monotonous description of India's riches and its ferocious beasts and monsters.
