Only one who has for many years held the office himself can estimate the pressures, the conflicting considerations, whether of policy, political, electoral or international repercussions, which bear on a Prime Minister. Sir Harold puts himself in the place of the other twelve Prime Ministers and in each case estimates the precise factors which governed the decisison-making process. The judgements in the book consequently provide new and challenging evaluations and some surprising re-assessments. The careers of the twelve Prime Ministers are placed in their historical context by intermediate chapters briefly surveying the developments under the other holds of the office from Walpole to modern times. The many illustrations have been carefully chosen to complement Sir Harold's text. .
