The Prince of India Vol I & II. By Lew Wallace. Published by Harper & Brothers, New York. 1893. First Edition. Hardbacks without dust jacket. Good Condition. Blue cloth with gilt titles on front cover along with embossed red rosary and moon and star in silver-light. Light rubbing at extremities. Covers faded and rubbed. Spine and edges have minor bumping, as well as some shelf/edge wear. The inside of Volume I is clean and unmarked except for 2.00 on fly page. Volume II is clean and unmarked except for previous owner's name and "November 1899" written on fly page. 502 pp + 578 pp are yellowed. Binding is good. Lewis Wallace was a general for the Union army during the Civil War. He went on to become governor of the New Mexico Territory out west. Wallace was also a lecturer who wrote three works during his busy life. Between his tenure as member of the court and holding office as governor, he published The Fair God (1873), while preparing to write Ben Hur (1880), which has since been translated into several languages. While spending time in the Middle East as an ambassador to Turkey gave him inspiration for his writing The Prince of India (1893) which was a story about a Jew during the period of the late Byzantine Empire.
