Publication date not given, but one inscription says July 7, 1805, another to February 8th, 1816. Marbled paper over boards, burgundy leather-backed, tips, edges, extremities scuffed to boards, but gilt ruling to spine and title still evident. Heavily foxed endpapers front and rear, less so interior but moderately and evenly toned. Previous owner's inscription at outset, another at book's end, that page torn in half. Sir Isaac Newton and Mr. Locke, for example, can be excused for a certain "absence of mind," but everyone else is enjoined not to spit on the carpet, not to lie and not to fail to bathe. Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, KG, PC (22 September 1694 – 24 March 1773) "was a British statesman, diplomat, man of letters, and an acclaimed wit of his time," says his Encyclopedia Britannica entry. 100 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
