The Red Lion in St Paul's Churchyard, London: R. & J. Bonwicke, 1707. "The Second edition, with the addition of many physical herbs and their vertues". 12mo (measures 165mm x 105mm), pp (6), 349, (29) (though errors in pagination mean that there are actually 411 pages of main text), slightly used and marked throughout, contemporary panelled calf, dull and cracke but very sound, early repairs to the corners, fairly recently rebacked with new calf spine, raised bands and title label. Lugduni Batavorum: Westenium, 1769. Latin text throughout. Title page, dedication leaf, pp 506, (ii), with seven engraved folding plates and one folding table, (slight damage to the margin of the ornithological plate), a little age-toning generally, endpapers unevenly browned, but otherwise very clean internally, bound in full contemporary polished calf, slight wear at the corners, joints cracking slightly, lacking a small piece at the head of the spine. [The students whose names appear on the dissertations were not necessarily their authors; it was their function to present the dissertation and defend it in public debate, but the responsibility for the content of the dissertation was largely that of the professor, in this case Linnaeus. The fact that Linnaeus cited the Amoenitates as the place of publication for plant names he credited to himself indicates that he was generally the principal author of the work. The Half-Moon over against St Dunstan's Church: Tho. Woodward, 1724. Illustrated with three folding engraved plates, commendation leaf, title page, pp (22), 333 (though actually 332), (14) + three page bookseller's advertisement, the largest plate has several splits at the folds but there is no loss, slight age-toning internally but otherwise clean and sound, contemporay calf blind-stamped, unlettered spine, some rubbing, wear, scuffs and marks but still very sound and with an attractive patina. [Blanche Henrey 1413 - mentioning the gap in pagination.]. [Switzer, c.1683 - 1745, was a nurseryman,seedsman and garden designer. A sound practical gardener and an early advocate of naturalistic gardening - "If the Beauties of Nature were not corrupted by Art, gardens would be much more valuable".]. First Edition. Full Leather.
