Tears on title page and the following contents page have been repaired with Japanese paper, possibly when being rebound. Small loss, 10mm, at top of half-title page of Probationary Odes. Purporting to be the work of Sir John Hawkins, this is actually a collection of satires and parodies by English playwright and satirist Richard Tickell and others, in which they claim their amusing pieces are the competitive essays of Thomas Wharton's rival for the position of Poet Laureate.Wharton was appointed Laureate in the year of the publication of this work.ESTC Citation No. T93999 Retaining the original half title, but lacking the final advertisement and errata leaf that the ESTC calls for.The very scarce first edition of this humorous work. The uncommon first edition of this work.ESTC citation number T126547.Half-title is present.A collection of satires and parodies, satiric competitive pieces for the rivals of the laureateship.Written by Richard Tickell under the pseudonym John Hawkins. Tickell was a noted eighteenth century playwright and satirist.Family bookplate of 'Laurence' to the front pastedown. Ink to the recto to the front endpaper. Ink inscription to the half-title. In a full marbled calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards and spine. Light cracks to the joints, with a small amount of loss to the front joint. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine, and light bumping to the extremities. Hinges are a little strained but remain firm. Bookplate to the front pastedown.
