Extracted from Nouvelles Archives de Musée d'Histoire Naturelle. 1895, 3. série, tome. VII. pp. (83)-114 with four text woodcuts and two chromolithographed plates by A. Millot (Lit. Lemercier) showing Max and Maurice.Contemporary calf backed marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. An extra-illustrated volume with 22 engravings, lithographs, half-tones and especially important 9 mounted original photographs by an unknown photographer showing the two orangoutans (living and as stuffed animals) with their zookeeper, their taxidermist (?) and with an exotic looking young male. It must have been a fascinating entertainment for the Parisian public and it is said that they attracted more than 100.000 visitors in 1893. They were imported from Borneo and travelled throughout Europe, public viewing was possible in Antwerp, Bruxelles and Paris. Within a year they died from stress and pneumonia. Ernst Pinkert from the Leipzig Zoological Gardens eventually bought them to nurse them back to health…

Bauer, Chronik der dt. Schriftgiessereien p. 166 (citing a copy with only 32 pages ?) ; Jolles. Die deutsche Schriftgiesserei p. 247 ; not in Bigmore/Wiyman ; not in Katalog der Bibliothek des Börsenvereins der deutschen Buchhändler ; not in St. Bride Foundation Catalogue ; not in Fischer. Der Verleger Johann Friedrich Cotta. Chronologische Verlagsbibliographie 1787-1832 ; cf. Druckenmüller. Der Buchhandel in Stuttgart p. 19 (for the setting up of the type foundry by Cotta in 1760). First and only edition of a scarce type specimen. Our copy with manuscript entry on title-page "Nb. The only type specimen issued by the important publishers Cotta during their long business history. Leaves 1 through 28 with various types, followed by mathematical, chemical and astronomical signs, music types, and finally leaves 31 to 48 with borders, ornaments and patterns for wrappers. The printed price list comprising pages 49 to 52 without printed or manuscript prices. I could not trace a copy on German auctions in the past 70 years. Very scarce with KVK showing two copies only : Gutenberg-Museum, Mainz and Columbia, NY. A fine copy in its marvellous wrappers with an ornate design of type ornaments.
