First Edition thus (previous edition in 1886 not credited in this volume). Very Good, clean tight condition with only a hint of rubbing to spine head/tail/edges. Fine prize-binding by Bickers & Son of Leicester Square, with their ink pallet on the verso of the front endpaper, in full maroon polished calf, the spine divided into six panels with tooled raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with gilt compartments. The covers with gilt borders and an armorial crest for the Grammar School, Loughborough, with marbled endpapers and gilt edges. Associated bookplate "The Grammar School, Loughborough" to front pastedown (unnamed, 'First in Form Prize for VI Lower').
Essays accompanied "with twelve portraits in permanent photography" including Washington Irving, Charles Lamb, Thomas de Quincey, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Matthew Arnold, John Morley, James Russell Lowell, Thomas Carlyle, Thomas Babington Macaulay, James Anthony Froude, Edward A.
