Chicago: The L.W. Singer Co., 1935. Hardcover. Very Good. Wiser, Guy Brown. Originally issued in 1927, this sixth grade literature reader was in use in U.S. classrooms for many years. This copy is the 1935 edition, revised by Cassie B. Burton. It includes studies of the lives and poems of Rudyard Kipling and Sir Walter Scott as well as selections from the works of Hans Christian Anderson, Oscar Wilde, Tolstoy, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Shakespeare,Wordsworth, Washington Irving, and many others. First Edition Thus. About 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, 592 pages, including a 5-page section at the end recommending "Books for Home Reading." Bound in red cloth-covered boards with black lettering on front cover and spine. No jacket. School card pocket pasted to inside front cover with "21" in black ink just above pocket. Previous owner's name in pencil on fep. Text edges moderately soiled, lightly bumped corners and spine ends. That noted, this copy is complete, including the frontispiece and other illustrations, clean and unmarked. Hinges, both interior and exterior are intact; binding is firm and tight. Overall, a very collectable example from Singer's "Prose & Poetry series.
