Books measure 185mm x 125mm approximately.

Nicely bound in fine full contemporary tan calf. Spine with twin gilt-ruled bands with maroon and black title and volume labels. Bound with half titles and full-page engraved frontispiece to title page verso. Plain end-papers and paste-downs.

CONDITION

The bindings are in very good general condition and holding firm. Boards and spines exhibit a few random general marks, and a few minor scuffs, and with moderate bumping to board corners.

Internally the pages are generally clean with usual mild toning, and with some marginal staining and a few spots to latter pages, end-papers and paste-downs. Large previous owner bookplate to front paste-down of each volume, partially "stuck" to front end-paper in vol I.

Please always refer to photo images for a clearer indication of condition.

We are always happy to provide further photo images if required.

INTERESTING

George Colman (1732 to 1794) was an English dramatist and essayist, usually called "the Elder", and sometimes "George the First", to distinguish him from his son, George Colman the Younger.

He was born in Florence, where his father was stationed as British Resident Minister at the court of the Grand duke of Tuscany. After attending a private school in Marylebone, George was sent to Westminster School. Colman left school in due course for Christ Church, Oxford. There he made the acquaintance of Bonnell Thornton, the parodist, and together they founded The Connoisseur. He left Oxford after taking his degree in 1755, and having been entered at Lincoln's Inn before his return to London, he was called to the bar in 1757. A friendship formed with David Garrick.

Colman was acting manager of Covent Garden for seven years, and during that period he produced several "adapted" plays of Shakespeare.
