Condition generally very good except for water staining to covers (particularly vol.2 extending to FEP, half-title and title pages) and very minor traces of mould close to bindings. Photos are unscathed in both volumes: 449 bandw historic photos in vol.1, plus 370 in vol. 2. : more than 800 photo heliogravures in excellent condition.

1889. Very Good. 2 albumen prints. The first, Rouen--Fontaine de la Grosse Horloge, is 255 x 199 mm. on a cardboard mount (297 x 239 mm). Caption printed in photograph in lower right: "54. Rouen_Fontaine de la Grosse horloge." Written in ink at lower edge of image: "Rouen, August 25/89." Written in pencil next to photograph on mount: "Printed by the house of T. Herlyison." The fountain was designed by Jean-Pierre Defrance and built next to the famous Gros Horloge in 1743; the bas relief depicts the mythological scene of the river Alpheus and the nymph Arethusa, and Cupid flying above them. This photograph includes a man waiting for a bucket to fill at the fountain and a woman carrying a bucket and moving off to the right. The window to the right of the fountain says "Debit de la Fontaine." The second photograph (209 x 270 mm), on the other side of the card mount, is an albumen print identified along the lower mount edge as only "Rouen." It… Leer más

This is a wonderful photograph of two literary giants, John Steinbeck and Carl Sandburg, on the occasion of Sandburg's 85th birthday, the party was at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, although the two men were great friends, Steinbeck looks as if he's about to bite off the head of Sandburg who looks as serene as always, c.8.5X6.5 inches, UPI text about the photo is affixed to the verso which also carries the UPI photo credit. Fine.

London: London Stereoscopic and Photographic Co, 1870. Near Fine. 1 albumen print 278 x 184 mm. Mat is 422 x 330 mm. No date of publication; evidence suggests it was produced around 1870. Following the Fire of London, the church of St. Mary Le Bow was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in the years 1668 to 1680. This 19th-century photograph shows the church and its neighbors, including the offices of the London Stereoscopic & Photographic Co. On the far right side of the photo are the offices of Keith, Prowse & Co., musical instrument manufacturer and music publisher. Cheapside itself is filled with horse-drawn vehicles and pedestrians. In Near Fine Condition: light creasing; clean and bright.

One side showing The Gap and South Head at Watsons Bay in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia (circa 1903); and on the other side a view of the town of Hobart, Tasmania (from Lansdowne Crescent) taken by John Watt Beattie. - Two collodion paper prints showing the harbour of Lyttelton, New Zealand by an unknown photographer, and a landscape view across the Bealey near Christchurch, New Zealand taken by E. Wheeler & Son - these also mounted on the recto and verso of an oblong of grey card. - One unmounted collodion paper print is of the Waimangu Geyser, which is located near Rotorua, New Zealand. This says JM2070 on the front - and possibly refers to the James Ingram McDonald (the painter, photographer, filmmaker, museum director, cultural ambassador, film censor, and promoter of Maori arts and crafts) and may have been taken whilst he was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in… Leer más
